Just another armchair thought/aspect of the Israel/Iran thing -- this is also a sunni vs shia thing with Iran being mostly shia and the rest of the middle eastern region being mostly sunni. The disdain between the two groups is on the level of a blood feud for many of the "true believers" in one side or the other (I've personally witnessed the severity of the conflict on US campuses in my university days, decades back, with exchange students -- with the administration covering things up post-haste). It's probably why Israel was able to pull off what they did (which required assistance, or at least compliance, of their sunni muslim neighbors). While I imagine most muslims (of any stripe) have little use for Israel, the enemy of my enemy is my friend and the sunni part of the muslim world fears a shia Iran with nukes more than it does Israel (at least that's my impression).
