Powerful framing. We would add that temporary emergency powers often create a financial constituency that benefits from their permanence. Once asset prices, government financing and institutional budgets depend on the intervention, reversal becomes politically more expensive than continuation. That may be the real ratchet: not merely intentions, but incentives that make extraordinary measures progressively harder to unwind.

This short piece reminds me of a time when BBC Radio 4's Today programme featured a slot called 'thought for today'.

"Whatever it takes" from central banks is usually code for expanding the balance sheet until duration risk becomes everyone else's problem.

you're truly getting your feet under you. I like the more forceful writing. We have seen the authoritarian inclinations for 6 years; people like Doug saw it 30 years ago. Now we have a small group that speaks the truth when they see it.

The Communists used a slight variation to that phrase: The ends justify the means.

Matt and Doug said that you would bring much to the table when you became editor of Crisis Investing. They were correct.

Whatever it takes for them to steal more freedom, wealth and prosperity from the citizen is what they truly mean. When governments act, it is never for the good of the average Joe.

Libertarianism: Close all 75> bases worldwide. Arm the border: army, navy. No treaties with anybody. Let Hawai, Alaska, Guam and PRico if they wish to secede. Defense is big but just for defense. Let ICE run down and expel anyone who shoud not be here.

Excellent article...."whatever it takes" is the service to self bunch, it's s spiral down in morality and debt. If you apply natural law to it, it becomes service to others, a spiral upwards and asset based. Two timelines, both existing simultaneously. I never realised until COVID how many are stuck in the service to self "whatever it takes"

Exactly so. "What ever it takes" language is unacceptable re fiat money and all human activity.
