As Doug doesn't have any kids, I'm curious how he will leave his inheritance when he checks out? Select charities? Close younger friends? Or, set up some foundation that has to spend it all within a short time span, so it can't get corrupted over many years like most foundations.
BTW, for me, I would give it to places that promote free markets (like Mises) or schools like Hillsdale. Basically investing in the future rather than just giving it to "the poor" today. I think that supporting the critical underpinnings (liberty, peace, free markets) is more valuable than just about anything else.
The “niceties” of war ebb and flow through history. Consider the Indian wars in North America. Also consider Sherman’s March to the Sea, to break the back of the Confederacy, in the War of Northern Aggression.
Couldn’t agree more that the important thing is to raise competent, self determined and kind children rather than focus on how much dough you are pouring into them at your death. Premium fuel in a defective engine only ruins it faster.
Not sure about whether the change in modes of warfare qualifies as a moral shift. Sending a collection of male teenagers to die at an out of country location seems pretty hideous by itself. Perhaps modern warfare is more democratized? Everyone can feel its consequences and know its costs. Including the “leaders” and politicians who bring it about.
